DesignEX - Melbourne 2013

Is on at the Melbourne Exhibition centre from 30 May to 1 June 2013. The exhibit has been running for 25 years and is a huge platform for all designers to share their experiences and knowledge.

The chaps from Lab De Stu have numerous product launches at DesignEx so get on down there and have a look!

Designing Injection Moulding Tooling

For a project at uni we had to choose an existing plastic component to a product or design one from scratch. The purpose of the project was to learn all the steps involved in the complicated process of modelling a component and then producing tooling in Solid works. The objectives of the project was to:

- Learn about the the injection molding process and  implications of part design
- The relationship between molded components and mold design
- Communicating with a second party for product manufacture (group partner)
- Specification of a product and material for injection moulding

We used Hales plastic moulding PDF from their website. As a reference for all standard components. The moulding had to use the standard JIS standard mould bases 1520 from Hales. And apply all relative Leader pins, Leader bushes, Ejector pins, Ejector bushes, Location ring, Sprue bush, Female cavity plate, Male Core plate, Top clamping plate, Bottom clamping plate, Ejector plate, Ejector retainer plate, Space blocks and all relative bolts.

This was a project by Myself Rowan Turnham and Matthew Harding

Soon Myoung - Laser Cut Light

For University our class had to, in groups of 2, design and prototype a light. This had to be done using laser cutting as the main manufacturing method. Many different lighting sources were used. And this light by one of the guys really demonstrated how to bend 3mm ply in a manner that allows it to bend and not fracture and split.

The ply was cut in a zig zag formation. Doing this allowed distribution of torsion and twisting factors.

Each length of the zig zag formation is located by a number of discs which determine the wave form to the whole light.

Discs determine the outside curve

Everchanging form

The shadows created were very cool!

The work of Object Future 2013

An exhibition that fuses the design practices all in one gallery. Taking the gallery to another realm, this exhibition is here to show Melbourne what is important in design. The open night was a great success with plenty of people showing up to celebrate the works of all of us exhibitors. Simone Leamon opened the exhibit and also produced a wonderful speech!

Threaded Out Duo

Threaded out Duo

Over 2 years ago I started experimenting with threads. I designed the original chair which used timber and Aluminium threads effectively. Although the chair was over complicated with many high tolerances but it was a really good experience in making a chair. The chair design was put to the side. Next I decided that this thread and plate combination should be applied to a table, Threaded Out Table was created and featured at "Workshopped 2012" and "Fringe Furniture 2012". Now after much development and design, Threaded Out Chair has just been completed. And I am very overwhelmed with the response so far! Both chair and table are on show at "Object Future" at Brunswick Street Gallery.

Threaded Out Duo

Pushed by the idea that furniture has to be flexible and versatile in its environment, the Threaded Out Chair and Table are based on the function of quick assembly and dis-assembly. The notion behind this collection is that the furniture is sturdy and strong like traditional constructed furniture where components are passively locked in place, yet still have the ability to be disassembled. Most importantly, the designs stay true to their pure function and to the materials they are made from.

No plastic is used in the construction of this chair and table. All materials can be recycled. Both the aluminium and timber will not take millions of years to break down like crude oil derived plastics. All by-products of production are apart of a closed loop system, and eventually become another useful product.

This has been a production by myself Rowan Turnham, 2013.

Fringe Furniture 2013 theme announced!

The theme for the Fringe Furniture 2013 exhibition has been released, it is apart of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The exhibit plays host to the whole festival. I've seen some really diverse designs over the past few years that push the boundaries of the 'furniture ideal' that is considered the benchmark in society today. Just to see design evolve and progress organically via the creative input of individuals and groups is amazing, I think this years exhibit will thrive and better last years!

Fringe Furniture 2013: Make It True

In 2013, Fringe Furniture will showcase the realisation of truth through design.
Great design makes true a form, a shape or function that already exists somehow; it reveals a truth we aren’t aware of yet.

Discovering great design is a revelatory experience, but it’s also a moment of recognition. It’s the sensation you get when the unfamiliar becomes something you’ve always known – call it déjà true. Great design fills the space between the real and the imagined in a way that makes it feel timeless.

This year’s Fringe Furniture designers will bring these half-glimpsed truths into sharp focus and make them real.

Delivered in partnership with the Abbotsford Convent, Fringe Furniture will open on 18 September and run Wed – Sun, 11am – 5pm until 6 October.Registrations for the event will be open 28 June – 26 July.

Tractors - Western Australia

So over Easter break I went over to Western Australia to see my family. During this time we went down south west and Checked out my relatives tractor collection.

It was amazing to see tractors ranging from the 1920's - 1950's. All types and makes. Some from England, America and Australia. Farmall, John Deer, Chamberlin, Fordson and Supa Dexta. All the components and parts are true, as they are not hidden by unnecessary cosmetic cladding. What you see is what you get, no gimmicks, true blue. Just to even start some of these tractors takes some real muscle to turn the flywheels.

The front of this tractor is for crop rows

John Deer, didn't have a muffler, she made alot of noise.....

All the chaps having a look

John Deer fresh of the ship from America

Here is an adjustable wheel axle, undo the bolts and slide wheels along keyway

John Deer, In perfect condition.

Key way for the wheels to slide along axle.

Coil spring for seat.

What a beauty

Looking a little worse for wear

Chamberlin, Australian made in the late 1930's

Now I want one of these track tractors

This tractor is actually offset from centre so the driver could see the crop.
