The work of Adam Lynch

Adams work uses the technology to cut, router & drill his products components. The mighty machine that does this is the CNC (Computer Numerical Control). Just one catch though, somebody has to program the design in.....Thankgod the machines of today are more user friendly. 

The machines allow for pin point accuracy, waste reduction, repetition without difference, multiple tool set up, 3 axis setup or even 5 axis! The list goes on and on depending on the type of CNC.

 His designs use joints that are strong and efficient in holding the structure together. His exploration in using different materials and joining methods aided with not using glue combines for a beautifully balanced range of products.

I just want to sit on these!

"The Qantas Spirit Of Youth Awards 365 (SOYA 365) has been the leading grants program for emerging creative talent for over seven years."

 

This year I have chosen to enter into SOYA 2012. 

This amazing program is here to give young Australians the opportunity to show their work off. It is here to help all designers, artists, writers, film & video, fashion, animation, architecture and photographers aspiring to become what they have dreamed to become since embarking on their journey.

I myself wish good luck to all the entrants. 

For my particular section (Qantas SOYA Craft & Object Award). If one of us is chosen, a 12 month mentorship with a professional in our field - Marc Newson will be given to the lucky winner. And to top it off, Flights to the UK plus ticket to the London design festival aswell.

The work of Chris Shaw

Chris uses sturdy joints that pull his furniture together which in turn will last a lifetime. Whether its fingers joints or bridal joints which are completed to perfection, these joints are made to be the focal point in each piece. We look forward to more work from this craftsman!

What is it

The Design Made Trade Exhibition is the place to be in Melbourne, July 19 - 22, 2012. This event showcases pure craftsmanship or craftswoman-ship! Designers from every discipline imaginable will be there from product design, graphic design, textiles, software, lighting, furniture, fashion, landscape design, accessories and hand made objects. 

Also a shout out to Lab De Stu (laboratorydesignstudio) Who have their first exhibitor space at this event.

Floribunda Chair - Chloe Locke

The Floribunda chair has an abundance of curves that are confined shoulder to shoulder, visually rolling from one side to the other. Chloe has done a wonderful job at making a chair that is a pleasure, visually, to look at!

I know what I would be using the inside of the curves for.....storing all my magazines in...

The work of Thom Lentini

Thom Lentini is a furniture designer that produces work that has this type of visual equivalence that always prevails into his work no matter what the brief. And the best thing is it works! His skateboard decks are distinctively contrasting and figurative. The forms are sleek and bullet like, ready to carve it up on the streets of Melbourne.


His piece convergence combines the use of concrete render and timber slates which creates a table that could be a center piece in anyone's outdoor space or even indoor space.

Threaded out Table - Lathe work

Today after buying new lathe tools and the timber for the project. The lathe was pulled out from its hiding space and put to good use.


For this project I'm using American Rock Maple. A dense timber ( its name speaks for itself) and produces beautiful figure when turned on the lathe as well. 


I went to a mates place earlier in the week to machine the timber and rip it ready for the lathe. Then centered each end of timber then knocked a small hole with the hole punch, following with a 5mm hole to allow the headstock and tailstock of lathe to grip on.

They are pretty long bits of timber......750mm!

1hour to turn it!

4 legs to turn, then off to get the threads CNC out.

Our need for new has taken over our way of life, even  global financial crisis. 

This has not only taken a toll on ourhip pocket but has also affected our environment 

with landfill sites filling to capacity and natural environments being lost."

Ernest Stool - Craig Byrne

Craig Byrne of Ernest studio has these ultra mobile and versatile stools that are designed for the cafe environment. A few simple movements and the stool is up and ready to be used. Also the stool use's reclaimed Blackbutt timber  and solid steel rod for support and most likely for some sort of pin that allows for rotation of each panel.
